What Is a No Credit Check Electricity Plan?

No credit check electricity plans are most commonly a type of prepaid electricity plan where you pay before you use any electricity.

Just as it sounds, a no credit check electricity plan allows you to quickly register and activate electricity to your home without a credit check approval.

Since you’re not subjected to a credit check, you’re not required to have a good payment history.

You simply deposit money into your prepaid account and the funds are deducted as you use electricity.

Do All Energy Companies Require a Deposit?

You may find some electricity plans that do not require a deposit, depending on the electric company.

However, many electricity companies require a deposit to protect themselves against customers who may default on payments or cancel their service without paying, which can negatively affect all customers.

Security deposits protect not only the provider, but also the customers and they help to keep energy rates low.

Along with a range of 100% renewable and money-saving plans, Gexa Energy offers electricity plans with low or no deposit options.

No Credit Check, No Deposit Electricity Plans: Pros and Cons

When you’ve got poor credit or no credit, it can feel like a no credit check, no deposit electricity plan is your only option.

But taking the time to weigh out the pros and cons before you make a decision on your electricity plan could save you a headache and tons of money.

4 Pros to No Credit Electricity Plans

No credit electricity plans have a handful of pros that lead electricity consumers to choose them time and time again.

For comparison purposes we’ve laid them out here so you can make the best choice for yourself.

#1: No Credit Checks

As promised, a prepaid plan offers the benefit of not running a credit check.

This can be especially helpful if you have no credit or bad credit.

Approval is simple and usually takes no longer than a day to get your account up and running.

#2: No Deposits

There are no two ways about it here.

No deposit is required. Instead, every dollar you pay goes directly towards your electricity usage.

#3: No Long Term Contracts

Often referred to as prepaid or pay-as-you-go plans, a no credit check month-to-month electricity plan doesn’t require a contract.

No contracts are convenient for those who are only in town for a short period of time because it means that you can cancel your service at any time without early termination fees.

#4: Bill Control

A prepaid plan gives you complete control over how much you spend on your electricity bill.

You pay only what you can afford at that time and when you’re able, you can top up your account.

3 Cons to No Credit Check Electricity Plans

Now that you’re well versed in the pros of a no credit check electricity plan, it’s always beneficial to compare and weigh the cons.

Though we’ve listed fewer cons than pros, read carefully to better understand how the burden of the cons can be much heavier in the grand scheme of things.

#1: Higher Rates

Some no credit check electricity plans may have higher initial rates than other traditional electricity plans.

It’s important to do the math beforehand.

Although a no credit check electricity plan might seem like a good option for immediate service, if you’re not careful it may mean paying more money in the end.

#2: Upfront Costs

With a no credit electricity plan, you might need to pay for all or some electricity costs upfront.

While it may not be considered a deposit, a prepaid plan or a version of a prepaid plan might be the only remaining option.

#3: Automatic Shut Offs

Instead of once a month, some no credit check electricity plans are prepaid plans that require frequent payments throughout the month.

That means if you don’t keep a watchful eye on your electricity usage and you reach the threshold of electricity you’ve paid for upfront, your service could be automatically disconnected.

In order to have your service reconnected, you may have to first add more money to your account.
