How do I sign up for services with Gexa Energy?

What are Gexa Energy’s rates?

Gexa Energy offers a variety of plans in each Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) area.

How soon can my services start?

There are a number of factors that determine the first available service start date at your premise. Find out the earliest date your services can start.  

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Depending on the results of the credit inquiry, a deposit may be required to begin electricity service. If a deposit is needed, we’ll let you know immediately.

How is the deposit amount determined?

We use a credit scoring system to determine whether a deposit is required to open an account. This credit scoring system considers items on your credit report and/or prior credit history and produces a score.

Customers who are required to pay a deposit may satisfy the deposit requirement by paying the $175.

What are my deposit waiver options?

If you do not meet the deposit exception requirement or demonstrate a satisfactory credit history, you must provide a deposit of $175.00 in order for you service to start with Gexa.

However, you may be eligible for a different deposit waiver.  A deposit may be waived if:

1) You are 65 years of age or older and you are not currently delinquent in payment of any electric service account

  • Please provide a copy of your valid Driver’s License and your last month’s electricity bill from your current provider indicating that you are not currently past due.

  • Include your enrollment Confirmation Number with the documentation.

  • Your request for service will be processed when your document is received and approved by Gexa Energy, which may take 3 – 5 days from date of receipt.

2) You provide written proof of your Active Military status

  • Please provide written proof of active military service status including name, date, and branch of service along with a copy of either the most recent bill from current provider or a copy of your lease or mortgage agreement confirming move-in within the last 30 days.

  • Include your enrollment Confirmation Number with the documentation.

  • Your request for service will be processed when your document is received and approved by Gexa Energy, which may take 3 – 5 days from date of receipt.

3) You provide an acceptable Credit Reference Letter

  • Please provide a copy of your Utility Credit History with your previous electric provider indicating you have made not more than one (1) late payment in the last twelve (12) months, or if less than twelve months of electricity history is provided, you must provide a minimum of six (6) months of service history with no late payments.

  • Include your enrollment Confirmation Number with the documentation.

4) You provide acceptable evidence you are a Victim of Family Violence

  • Please complete a Victim of Family Violence Form

  • The Victim of Family Violence, as defined in the Texas Family Code section 71.004, must be completed by a certifying entity. The following are considered a “certifying entity”:

    • Family Violence Center

    • Treating Physician or Medical Personnel

    • Law Enforcement Personnel

    • Office of Texas District Attorney, County Attorney, the Attorney General

    • Grantee of the Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation when you submit a certification letter from the Texas Council of Family Violence.

    • Include your enrollment Confirmation Number with the documentation.

5) You provide acceptable evidence you are Medically Indigent

  • Include your enrollment Confirmation Number with the documentation.

  • Your request for service will be processed when your document is received and approved by Gexa Energy, which may take 3 – 5 days from date of receipt.

6) You provide acceptable Credit Review due to Spousal Separation

  • Please provide a copy of the Divorce Decree dated within the last twelve (12) months and a copy of Utility Credit History with your previous electric provider in former spouse’s name. Utility Credit History must indicate that you and/or your former spouse have made no more than one late payment in last twelve (12) months, or if less than twelve (12) months of electric history is provided, applicant must provide a minimum of six (6) months of service history with no late payments.

7) Low Income Deposit Assistance

  • Please complete a Deposit Assistance Application. (Deposit Assistance Form Hyperlink to open PDF in new window here)

  • To qualify to pay your deposit in two (2) equal installments you must show proof of eligibility.

  • To show proof of eligibility you must send either:

    • A bill from your current electricity provider showing that you have received the low-income discount within the past six (6) months.

    • A letter from your current provider confirming that you are a qualified low-income customer.

    • Include your enrollment Confirmation Number with the documentation.

The first installment will be due no sooner than ten (10) days from your enrollment date and the second installment no sooner than forty (40) days later.

When is the deposit due?

The deposit requirement must be satisfied prior to starting services with Gexa Energy. 

When is the deposit refunded?

Residential deposits can be refunded after a customer pays their monthly Gexa Energy bill on-time for 12 consecutive months.  Or, once the customer’s account has closed, Gexa Energy will apply the deposit plus interest as a credit to their final bill. If the credit exceeds the total of the customer’s final bill, a refund check for the difference will be issued.

Budget Billing is a great way to stabilize the seasonal fluctuations in your electricity bill.

Budget Billing is designed to make your bill more predictable, so you can more easily budget for your energy costs year round. Your statement will continue to show your actual electricity usage, but you will pay the level Budget Billing amount each month.
