Do all Texas residents get to choose their retail electricity provider?

Many Texas communities are deregulated, meaning their residents can choose their own electric provider. However, this isn’t the case for the whole state. You can visit our Residential Service Areas page for more details.

How quickly can I set up my electricity service?

Gexa Energy strives to make setting up your new electricity service a simple and convenient experience. After selecting an available plan, you can schedule your new service up to 60 days in advance. We also offer same-day service for qualifying enrollments.*

How does electricity work in Texas?

Gexa Energy is part of Texas' deregulated energy market which gives you the power to choose your retail electricity provider. Since 2002, Texans who live in deregulated areas have enjoyed the freedom to select from various providers and plans that best match their lifestyle and budget needs. Can I switch electricity providers in Texas?

Yes. Thanks to Texas’ deregulated electricity market, you can shop for and switch providers at the end of your contract or earlier, depending on any early termination fees.

What happens after I sign up with Gexa?

Once you have signed up for one of our plans, we will contact your current utility for you. ERCOT will also send you a postcard notifying you of the retail electricity provider (REP) switch. Visit our How to Enroll page to learn more.

What is the average household electricity usage in Texas?

The average electric charge in Texas varies based on usage, home size, and the season. Typically, households in Texas use around 1,200 kWh per month, but your price will depend on your specific plan and usage habits. 

What are Gexa Energy’s rates?

Gexa Energy offers a variety of plans in each Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) area. If you are a new customer, you can shop available plans for the most up-to-date pricing. If you are a current Gexa customer, please sign into My Account to browse current plans.

*Requests processed after 2:00pm (CST) will be connected the next business day, weather permitting. Depending on utility, one-day service may be offered Monday through Friday, weather permitting, where an existing smart meter is in place. No weekend or holiday connections. Enrollment and permit requirements must be met before a request can be processed. Additional charges and smart meter requirements may apply.
 
**Happiness Guarantee - If you're not happy with your new Gexa Energy residential plan, just contact us within 60 days of your service activation date. You have the freedom to choose any eligible plan we offer, without incurring penalties. It's that easy. Applies one time only for new Gexa Energy residential customers. Your contract term will restart with your second plan. Offer subject to change or withdrawal prior to customer acceptance.

Additional Information

Gexa Energy purchases renewable energy credits (RECs) from renewable generation resources throughout North America to match 100% of the energy sold under your electric plan.  The RECs Gexa purchases represent the renewable attributes of power generated from a variety of renewable energy sources, including, but not limited to, the sun, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, wave or tidal energy, and biomass or biomass-based waste products, including landfill gas.
