Benefits of a Solar Buyback Electricity Plan

A solar buyback plan from Gexa Energy can help you get more value from your rooftop solar system while providing a straightforward way to manage your home's energy needs.

Lower Electricity Costs

When your solar panels generate electricity for your home, you may reduce the amount of energy you need to purchase from the grid. This can help offset a portion of your monthly energy costs, depending on your system's production and your household's usage patterns.

Get Value from Excess Solar Energy

Solar production and household energy use don't always coincide. With a solar buyback plan, eligible excess energy exported to the grid can earn bill credits that will be automatically applied to your energy bill.

Support Renewable Energy Growth

Rooftop solar helps increase the amount of renewable energy generated across Texas. Solar buyback plans help connect your home's solar production with the broader energy network while rewarding you for eligible excess generation.

Maximize Your Solar Investment

A solar buyback plan works alongside your rooftop solar system to help you make the most of the energy it produces. With the ability to earn credits for eligible excess generation, you can continue benefiting from your solar investment even when your home is producing more electricity than it is using.

How to Choose the Right
Gexa Energy Solar Buyback Plan

The right solar buyback plan from Gexa Energy depends on your solar system, your household's energy usage, and the features that matter most to you. As you compare options, consider:

Solar production: The amount of energy your solar panels typically generate each month.

Household energy usage: Your monthly consumption patterns and seasonal changes in usage.

Energy credit structure: How eligible excess energy exported to the grid is credited under the plan.

Battery compatibility: Availability of features and benefits for homes with battery storage systems.

Contract term: The length of the plan and how it fits your energy goals.

Plan details: Eligibility requirements, enrollment terms, and any applicable program features.

Understanding Solar Buyback Credits

Solar buyback credits are based on the eligible excess electricity your solar system exports to the grid after your home's energy needs have been met. Your utility's meter records both the electricity you use from the grid and the electricity your system sends back, allowing each to be tracked separately.

Credits for eligible exported energy will appear on your monthly statement according to your plan's credit structure. Because electricity usage and exported energy are measured independently, the amount of energy your home consumes and the amount of energy your solar system exports may differ throughout the billing period.

Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Buyback Plans

What is a solar buyback plan?

A solar buyback plan is an electricity plan that provides bill credits for the eligible excess energy your solar system exports to the grid. These plans are designed for homes with rooftop solar and allow you to receive value for the electricity your home does not use immediately.

How does solar buyback work in Texas?

Texas solar buyback plans work by measuring both the electricity your home uses from the grid and the excess electricity your solar system sends back to it. Eligible exported energy may earn bill credits according to your plan's terms, which are then reflected on your monthly statement.

Does Gexa buy excess solar energy?

Yes, Gexa offers solar buyback plans that offer bill credits for eligible excess solar energy exported to the grid. Credit calculations, rates, and eligibility requirements vary by plan, so be sure to review the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) and Terms of Service for details.

Can I enroll in a solar buyback plan without battery storage?

Yes, homeowners without battery storage should enroll in the Gexa Solar Buyback 12 plan.

What happens if I use more electricity than I generate?

If your home uses more electricity than your solar system generates, you will receive electricity from the grid to meet your energy needs. Your monthly electricity bill will reflect the electricity supplied to your home, along with any applicable solar credits, if any.

How are solar credits calculated?

Solar credits are based on the amount of eligible excess energy your solar system exports to the grid. Credit amounts are determined according to your specific plan and are outlined in the Electricity Facts Label (EFL).

Do I need a smart meter for Gexa’s solar buyback plans?

Yes. A compatible smart meter is required to measure both the electricity your home consumes and the excess energy your solar system exports to the grid.

Can apartment renters use solar buyback plans?

No. Solar buyback plans are generally intended for customers who own or have access to a rooftop solar system capable of exporting electricity to the grid, not apartment renters.

Is there a contract term for Gexa’s solar buyback plans?

Yes. Gexa offers solar buyback plans with 12-month contract terms. Canceling your contract before it expires may require you to pay an early termination fee (ETF), unless you’re moving or in the final 14 days of your contract. If your service is terminated, any available bill credits will be applied to your final bill. Any remaining unused credits after the final bill is paid will be forfeited and cannot be redeemed for cash.

How do I switch to Gexa Energy?

You can switch to Gexa Energy by selecting an available plan and completing enrollment online. Before switching, review any existing contract obligations with your current retail electric provider, including potential early termination fees. These fees do not apply to anyone who is moving or who has only two weeks left on their contract.

By enrolling in the Battery Benefits Service, you authorize Gexa to access and monitor your home battery system performance and data, including the ability to discharge energy to the electric grid.
