Gexa Employees Serve Houston Community on Annual Power to Care Day

Volunteers donate time and talent to the Houston Food Bank and the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA

Houston, Texas - March 17, 2016

On Saturday, March 5, 2016, employees from Gexa Energy, a leading retail electricity provider in Texas, celebrated the company’s annual Power to Care Day, a companywide opportunity for employees to make a difference in the communities in which they live and work. The team of volunteers, made up of employees, family, friends and executive leadership, volunteered at the Houston Food Bank (Portwall Warehouse location) and the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek.

“Whether we are providing affordable residential and business electricity plans, or volunteering our time and talents to improve our community, Gexa is dedicated to serving our customers,” said Brian Landrum, president of Gexa Energy.  “Power to Care Day speaks to our core values, and provides employees the opportunity to make a difference in our communities while spending meaningful time with co-workers, friends and family.”

Volunteers at the Houston Food Bank sorted non-perishable food and filled backpacks for the Backpack Buddy program, which provides nutritious meals to children during school vacation week. The team filled 5,000 backpacks with 30,000 meals.  Another team of employees and their families volunteered at the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek. The team helped clean up the ground’s garden beds by weeding, re-soiling and laying crushed stone and mulch.

“We rely on the generosity of the community for food donations, financial support and volunteers,” said Brian Greene, President/CEO of the Houston Food Bank. “By organizing volunteer opportunities for employees, Gexa is setting an example and improving our community by helping to feed 800,000 people in the Houston area.”

Power to Care Day is a company-wide initiative for employees of NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE), Gexa Energy's parent company.
