GEXA ENERGY TO POWER TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE’S FIRST "ALL-GREEN" FACILITY IN NORTHEAST HOUSTON
Houston, TX - March 20, 2007
The Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center, a 2,800-acre education and recreation facility in northeast Houston, has become the first Texas Parks and Wildlife Department state park to operate with 100-percent renewable energy, thanks in large measure to the state agency’s decision to purchase wind-generated electricity from Gexa Energy.
Gexa Energy will supply the Sheldon Lake facility with wind-generated power as part of an agreement which calls for the company to provide electricity service to all Texas Parks & Wildlife facilities, wherever electricity deregulation exists in the state. The Sheldon agreement is made possible by a recently completed broader contract under which Gexa can supply green power to state parks and other TPWD sites not currently served by electric co-ops and other regulated energy providers. Sheldon Lake is the first TPWD site to take advantage of the new arrangement.
"Organizations such as Texas Parks & Wildlife are taking a good, hard look at renewable energy sources," says Gexa Energy Business Solutions Manager Jay Beasley, who presented Sheldon Lake's Superintendent Robert Comstock with a certificate of appreciation and a desktop wind turbine as a symbolic measure of the company's appreciation. "We’re certainly seeing a growing number of commercial customers taking a longer look at wind power."
Gexa Energy's parent company, FPL Energy, owns and operates more wind generation than any other retail electric provider in Texas, Beasley adds. FPL Energy also is the largest U.S. generator of wind power with 44 wind farms in 15 states.
The Sheldon Lake Environmental Learning Center provides an opportunity for school children, many from the inner city, to experience an outdoors environment, fish in ponds and learn about plants and animals that live in and around wetlands. As the result of a grant from the State Energy and Conservation Office, the facility also demonstrates alternative energy systems with solar panels, a wind turbine and other renewable-energy technologies.
Gexa Energy (PUCT #1027), the retail subsidiary of FPL Energy, is one of several retail electric providers servicing homeowners and businesses throughout Texas. Having entered the Texas deregulated energy market in 2002, Gexa Energy now serves close to 200,000 customers in Texas alone.
