Houston Independent School District Signs Multi-Year Energy Supply Agreement With Gexa Energy
HOUSTON, TX - May 21, 2009
The Houston Independent School District, the largest public school system in Texas and the seventh largest in the United States, has signed an energy supply agreement with Houston-based Gexa Energy.
“The District is pleased with our new services contract with Gexa Energy and looks forward to a seamless transition later this summer,” says Melinda Garrett, chief financial officer of HISD.
The multi-year agreement, which commences August 1, 2009, calls for Gexa Energy to supply electricity to the District’s 425 campus buildings, administrative and athletic facilities.
“There were a number of factors involved in the District’s selection process of a retail electric provider, but certainly financial stability ranked up at the top,” says Annette Van Brunt, an energy management consultant who represented the District in its negotiations.
Gexa Energy’s parent company, FPL Group, is a leading clean energy company with 2008 revenues of more than $16 billion and a presence in 27 states and Canada, according to Gexa Energy Vice President Sales Collin Coker.
“We’re seeing customers placing a much greater emphasis on a provider’s financial backing, particularly those such as school districts and municipalities,” says Coker. “HISD is a key addition to our portfolio of school districts and universities.”
In addition to servicing the District’s electricity needs, Gexa Energy provides Houston Independent School District employees with an ongoing, three-percent discount off the company’s published fixed-rate electricity plans.
