Expert Advises on Risks of "Timing" Wholesale Energy Markets
RISING ELECTRICITY COSTS HAVE YOU CONCERNED?
Understanding Options Critical As Summer Months Approach

HOUSTON, TX - May 20, 2008

Summer temperatures and the rising cost of fuel used to create power – namely oil and natural gas – have many consumers wondering just how high their summer electricity bills might climb.

It’s a sobering thought that has many families thinking ahead and doing their homework to shop the market and identify the retail electric provider, rate and terms that best suit their summer budget.

“An informed consumer is a good consumer for us,” says Victor Howard, Gexa Energy’s Senior Director, Marketing. “Evaluating electricity products and terms does take time, but the benefit over the summer and beyond can be significant.”

Residential electricity products are typically categorized as fixed-rate or variable-rate products, based on how often the price changes. Furthermore, residential electricity products may be sold as “month to month,” meaning the consumer can change companies or plans at any time; or “contract,” meaning the consumer agrees to receive service from the provider or plan for a certain period of time. Most fixed rate products require a contract.

Fixed-Rate Contract: With a fixed-rate contract, customers can lock into the same energy commodity rate during a specified period. Products such as Gexa Energy’s Gexa Guaranteed 12-month, fixed-rate plan protects consumers from rising electricity costs by securing the same energy commodity rate for a full year, regardless of changes in fuel costs or how much energy one uses.

“Always check a provider’s Terms of Services and Electricity Facts Label to make sure its fixed rate is indeed a fixed rate,” advises Howard. “Some providers may adjust their fixed rate according to seasonality.”

Variable Rate: Variable electricity rates can go up or down, depending on changes in the wholesale electricity market. With variable rate plans, consumers will benefit when market prices fall, but they also will pay more if prices spike due to natural disasters or sudden changes in the wholesale pricing of electricity. Most variable rate plans do not require a contract.

Additionally, retail electricity providers may offer a balanced billing payment option that can help qualified consumers manage their budget through the summer and all year long. Gexa Energy’s Budget Billing payment option allows customer to pay the same amount each month. The monthly amount is based on the average of one’s electricity usage from the past 12 months.

“A fixed rate product such as Gexa Energy’s Gexa Guaranteed, combined with a balanced billing option, is a great choice for consumers concerned about rising electricity prices and managing their monthly costs,” says Howard. “This combination allows our customers to lock in their electricity commodity rate to avoid surprises due to spikes in the market price of electricity, as well as averaging out seasonal bill increases due to higher electricity usage during the hot summer months.”
