Have You Been Sent to an Electricity “Provider of Last Resort?”
Current Retail Electric Providers Taking Steps to Help Customers Understand Options
Back to Press Releases
HOUSTON, TX - May 30, 2008
Are you one of the thousands who received a notice stating your retail electric provider has ceased servicing customers
in Texas? If so, your service was transferred without interruption to the “provider of last resort” in accordance with
the rules of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
More than 15,000 customers of National Power Co. and PreBuy Electric LLC were moved to providers of last resort when the
two companies dropped their Texas customers due to financial difficulties.
As a result, the larger and more financially stable retail electric providers are taking proactive measures to address
the questions of those now served by a provider of last resort.
“Customers want to know who their new provider is, what their rate will be and what options they have going forward,”
says Allison Wall, vice president, residential marketing and customer care for Gexa Energy, a Texas-based retail electric
provider serving as a provider of last resort for about 1,500 former customers of PreBuy Electric.
Gexa Energy has sent letters to its provider of last resort customers explaining they can change to one of the company’s
other pricing plans. The company also has staffed its Houston customer service center with representatives assigned to
respond exclusively to provider of last resort questions.
Customers with provider of last resort questions can call Gexa Energy at 713-401-5997 or toll free at 866-415-4392.
As part of researching their provider of last resort, customers should review their new provider’s deposit requirements,
their other service plans and terms of service, Wall advises.
She also adds the recent announcements of smaller retail electric providers ceasing service in Texas has reinforced the
importance of customers examining the soundness and stability of their retail electric provider.
“Compare credit ratings, find out when a company entered the deregulated market and ask if the provider is backed by
reputable company,” says Wall, who notes Gexa Energy’s standing as an FPL Group company, a Fortune 200 organization.
